Sunscreen Smart

April 20, 2012

When it comes to sunscreens, once you find something that works there is really no need to change. It’s not like shampoo where it’s good to switch up what you use every once in a while. Finding the right sunscreen that works for you skin type can be a bit tricky, but there’s only a few things to keep in mind. First, know your skin. If you’re prone to breakouts or skin that’s extra oily, you probably won’t be reaching for the classic bottle of Banana Boat or Coppertone to protect your face. La-Roche Posay  and Shiseido are two wonderful companies that make excellent sunscreens.

My mom first got us into using La-Roche Posay before it was sold in the U.S., so she had it shipped overseas. Luckily, it’s finally available here and hasn’t taken long for its success to catch on. Anthelios 50 Mineral (don’t let the high number scare you, it just protects you longer from UVA/UVB rays), is perfect for those with sensitive skin. It’s ultralight and doesn’t leave you with that overly white, greasy feel but instead with a matte finish. Another important factor: it’s fragrance-free. I know everyone loves the smell of sunscreen in the summer but trust me, you don’t want that on your face—-clogged pore city!

No matter what time of year it is, there is always a bottle of Shiseido sunscreen in my house. If you want my opinion, this option is the way to go. Not to mention the colors of the packaging that I just love, the formula of the sunscreen is ultra moisturizing and fights UVA/UVB rays and free radicals. Another great factor about this sunscreen is that it’s water-resistant so it’s perfect for those beach or pool days. It’s never too early to start protecting your skin. Trust me, there’s nothing chic about having skin that looks like leather!
