Style Crush

December 31, 2011

I’ve never been one to copy the style of a celebrity or purposely try to dress like anyone else, but I definitely have a few style crushes. I think it’s important that everyone discover, play with and tweak their own personal style without having someone else decide it. I know plenty of people well into their 30’s and 40’s who still don’t have a “set style”. There’s nothing wrong with this! Part of discovering what you like is first experimenting with different shapes, cuts, and fabrics to see what looks good with your hair/skin/body type. That being said, I was asked recently by a follower who my “style crushes” are, and I’ve decided to share. For me, having a style/girl/whatever you want to call it crush, isn’t all about clothes. All of the young women below have incredible jobs, graduated from excellent schools, are fabulous moms (2 of them have kids), and are happily in a relationship or married (I don’t know if MKS has a boyfriend), but regardless….they all have the full package and look fabulous while doing it!)

Joanna Hillman is the Senior Market Fashion Editor of Harper’ Bazaar. Before she was there, she was the Senior Market Director at Teen Vogue. Need I say more? She gets to travel around the world and discover the latest and upcoming in trends, style, accessories, etc. Also, she got married last month {her wedding, here} and couldn’t have been a more elegant bride.

I’ve been a Milly fanatic for years now, and the designer behind the beautiful creations is truly my inspiration. Before starting Milly in 2000, Michelle Smith worked for Hermes, Dior and Louis Vuitton. After meeting her in November, I wasn’t even the least bit surprised at how incredibly sweet and genuine not only Michelle, but the rest of the Milly girls were. Not to mention Michelle has the most adorable daughter who models for Milly Minis.

Lauren Santo Domingo {or LSD as many in the fashion world would refer to her}, is the real deal. Not only is Lauren a contributing editor of Vogue, but she is the co-founder of Moda Operandi and resident of one of the most coveted townhouses in Manhattan. Her wardrobe is also to die for.

Say what you want about her, but it’s hard to find a picture of Olivia Palermo not looking pulled together. With her signature cat-eye makeup and always chic hairstyles, Olivia has perfected mixing high and lower end designers to create a sophisticated yet not stuffy style. Between co-designing a jewelry line, being part of the Tibi Spring 2011 ad campaign and traveling between the U.S., Paris and U.K for work with Elle and her other projects, Olivia has a lot on her plate…not to mention her gorgeous boyfriend, Johannes Hueblin.

Mary Kate Steinmiller has such an inspiring story. Starting out as an intern at Teen Vogue, she worked her way up from being an assistant to actually becoming the Fashion Market Editor, a title she currently holds. I met her once, and if you can’t tell just by looking at her, she’s such a sweet person. Her style is usually pretty different from anything I’d normally wear, but I admire how she puts things together.
