Mean Reds

January 27, 2011

Holly Golightly: You know those days when you get the mean reds?

Paul Varjak: The mean reds, you mean like the blues?

Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?

One of my favorite iconic lines from Breakfast at Tiffany’s seems to describe the perfect mood for this week. Whether I’m at the gym, walking around campus or out running errands, the inevitable winter blues have officially started to settle in. With this absolutely dreadful snow storm hitting us these past 2 two days on top of being stuck inside, it’s hard to find inspiration and any motivation to do much. Besides getting lost in old movies at night (Roman Holiday has been my favorite choice this week), and reading French plays for class (Molière Tartuffe, which I’m actually loving), it’s been a rather dull week. When I came home from my internship today I decided that the only way to pull myself out of the winter blues before they settled in was to plan ahead. Out came the Lilly calender and the planning began. An hour later train tickets were booked to visit my best friend this weekend, and the perfect Valentine’s Day gift (which I’ve been on the hunt to find) was arranged and finished.
